Nvidia has announced a landmark $12.93 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, bringing one of the world's most influential open-source artificial intelligence platforms under the chipmaker's ownership. The deal marks a major expansion of Nvidia's strategy beyond AI hardware and deeper into software, models and developer infrastructure.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced the agreement on September 3, 2026. According to Nvidia, the transaction is designed to provide Hugging Face with additional resources, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to artificial intelligence tools for developers and institutions around the world.
What Is Hugging Face?
Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has become a major hub for open-source AI development. The platform allows developers, researchers and companies to share, discover, customize and deploy AI models, datasets and applications.
Nvidia says more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face. The platform hosts more than 3 million AI models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, while more than 200,000 companies use its services.
Hugging Face Will Remain Open
One of the biggest questions surrounding the acquisition is whether Nvidia will restrict access to Hugging Face or make its own hardware mandatory.
Nvidia has said that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the broader AI ecosystem. Developers will continue to have freedom to choose their models, frameworks, cloud providers, inference services and computing platforms. Nvidia also stated that its computing hardware will not be required to build or deploy through Hugging Face.
The company is also expected to continue supporting open-source and open-weight models as well as multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development.
Deal Structure and Closing Timeline
The transaction includes approximately $11.9 billion payable to Hugging Face shareholders, along with an equity-based retention programme worth up to approximately $1 billion for employees joining Nvidia. The acquisition is expected to close during the first half of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and required regulatory approvals.
Why the Deal Matters
The acquisition strengthens Nvidia's position across the AI ecosystem at a time when open and customizable AI models are becoming increasingly important. Nvidia has traditionally been best known for its powerful GPUs and data-centre technology, but the Hugging Face deal gives it a much stronger presence in the software and developer layers of AI.
