The series is set in Heera Mandi, a neighborhood and bazaar in Lahore's Walled City, also known as the city's red-light district. The area was originally named "Hira Singh Di Mandi" after Hira Singh Dogra, a prime minister of the Sikh Empire, and was intended to be an economic hub with tawaifs and royal court entertainers. During the Mughal period, Heera Mandi was a community based on tawaif culture and song and dance. After British colonization, the area became a red-light district, primarily for prostitution.
