A multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, triggering a major rescue operation as several people were feared trapped under the debris. According to officials, six people have been rescued and shifted to hospitals, while search and rescue efforts remain underway.
The incident took place near Shiv Mandir in Satya Niketan, an area close to Delhi University's South Campus and known for student accommodation. The collapsed structure was reportedly being used as a hostel/PG facility. Officials said the exact number of people trapped was initially unclear.
Multiple Rescue Teams Deployed
Following the collapse, teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency agencies rushed to the spot. Fire tenders and specialised rescue equipment were deployed to clear the rubble and search for survivors.
Visuals from the site showed rescuers working through large amounts of concrete and debris. Local residents also joined the initial rescue efforts before specialised machinery arrived.
The building collapse has also resulted in casualties. Reports citing AIIMS officials said one person was brought dead and two others were in critical condition after being taken to the trauma centre. A rescuer was also reportedly among those treated.
Basement Work Under Investigation
Preliminary information suggests that renovation work and excavation in the basement may have weakened the building's lower supports, although authorities have not yet established the definitive cause of the collapse. The structure was reportedly around 40–50 years old.
Authorities have cordoned off the surrounding area while rescue teams continue their operation. The focus remains on locating anyone who may still be trapped beneath the debris and safely removing the collapsed portions of the structure.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of older residential and hostel buildings in Delhi, particularly where construction or renovation work is carried out.
