The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a major change in school admissions, with the caste column set to be removed from school admission forms from the 2027-28 academic session. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the move is aimed at reducing caste-based discrimination and promoting equality among children.
Caste Details to Be Removed From School Forms
Chief Minister Sukhu announced the decision while chairing a meeting of the Himachal Pradesh Scheduled Caste Welfare Board (HPSCWB) in Shimla. He said the government wants to prevent children from developing feelings of inferiority or superiority based on caste from an early age.
The new system is expected to apply from the next academic session, 2027-28. The government believes removing caste identification from routine school admission documents can help create a more inclusive educational environment.
Government Benefits Will Continue
The removal of the caste column does not mean eligible students will lose access to government welfare schemes or benefits.
According to the government, students from Scheduled Caste communities will still be required to provide caste-related information whenever it is necessary to claim benefits under government schemes. This means the information will continue to be available for welfare purposes even though it will not be part of the regular school admission form.
The government has stressed that the policy is intended to separate routine educational admission processes from caste identification while ensuring that students entitled to reservations or welfare support are not deprived of those benefits.
Move Aims to Promote Equality
Sukhu said the decision is part of the state's broader effort to eliminate caste-based discrimination and promote fraternity and equality. The government believes that avoiding unnecessary caste identification in school records could help children grow up in an environment where their social background is less likely to influence how they are treated.
Reports also indicate that the move will extend beyond school admission forms, with caste-related columns being removed from college prospectuses as well.
Welfare Schemes to Continue
The Himachal Pradesh government has also highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting disadvantaged communities. These include financial assistance and education-related support.
The state is providing loans of up to ₹20 lakh to meritorious students for higher education at an interest rate of 1%, according to the Chief Minister. Other welfare initiatives are also being implemented for economically weaker families and Scheduled Caste communities.
The decision to remove the caste column is therefore being presented as a social reform measure rather than a change to existing welfare eligibility. Students who qualify for government assistance will continue to provide the required documentation when applying for such schemes.
