The Bhagyalakshmi Scheme in Karnataka has recently seen updates that have caused concern among beneficiaries, particularly regarding the cancellation of some scheme cards. While the scheme itself remains active, the Women and Child Development Department has introduced stricter monitoring measures to ensure that only eligible families continue to benefit. This has led to the deactivation of certain cards where verification failed, duplicate registrations were found, or misuse of benefits was detected.
Launched in 2006, the Bhagyalakshmi Scheme was designed to support girl children born into Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, with the government depositing funds into LIC accounts at birth. These funds mature when the girl turns 18, providing financial assistance for education or marriage. The scheme has been a cornerstone in Karnataka’s efforts to combat female foeticide, child marriage, and gender inequality.
The recent cancellations are not a sign of discontinuation but rather part of a push for accountability and transparency. Families who fail to update Aadhaar details, birth certificates, or maintain proper documentation risk losing their cards. Duplicate registrations and attempts by non-BPL families to claim benefits have also been flagged. Inactive accounts where LIC-linked deposits were not properly maintained have similarly faced suspension.
To address these issues, the government has launched awareness drives urging families to register daughters within one year of birth and to keep documents updated annually. Beneficiaries who believe their cards were wrongly canceled can file complaints with the Women & Child Development Department through helplines such as 080-22355984 and 080-22252329.
