The Kerala government has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in several districts on Monday, August 3, following incessant rainfall that has triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and waterlogging across the state. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff amid the continuing spell of heavy monsoon rains.
Several districts have witnessed overflowing rivers, landslides in hilly regions, and severe disruption to road transport over the past few days. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more rainfall, district administrations have opted to suspend classes in affected areas.
Districts Where Schools and Colleges Will Remain Closed
A complete holiday has been declared for all educational institutions in the following districts:
- Pathanamthitta
- Kottayam
- Idukki
- Thrissur
- Palakkad
- Malappuram
- Kozhikode
- Wayanad
- Kannur
- Kasaragod
The closure applies to schools, colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, and other educational institutions, as directed by the respective district collectors.
Partial Holidays in Alappuzha and Ernakulam
In Alappuzha, holidays have been declared for educational institutions functioning as relief camps and for all schools and colleges located in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks.
Meanwhile, in Ernakulam, educational institutions, except professional colleges, will remain closed in Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha taluks. Anganwadis and tuition centres in these areas have also been ordered to remain shut. Schools that are currently being used as relief camps in other parts of the district will also remain closed.
Examinations to Continue as Scheduled
Authorities have clarified that the holiday announcement does not affect previously scheduled public examinations. Kerala PSC exams, university examinations, and other competitive tests will be conducted as planned unless separate notifications are issued by the respective authorities.
Students appearing for examinations have been advised to check official announcements from their institutions before travelling.
Heavy Rain Continues Across Kerala
The state has been experiencing intense rainfall over the past several days, resulting in floods, landslides, and damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure. Rescue and relief operations are continuing in several districts where low-lying areas remain inundated.
The IMD has issued weather alerts for Kerala, warning of continued heavy rainfall and urging residents in landslide-prone and flood-affected areas to remain cautious. Local authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow official safety advisories.
With weather conditions expected to remain unstable, district administrations are closely monitoring the situation and may issue additional advisories if rainfall intensifies.
