The BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has clinched a decisive win in the Assam Assembly elections held on April 9, 2026, marking its third consecutive triumph in the state. Out of the 126 seats, the NDA secured 102, with the BJP alone winning 82 seats—its first ever absolute majority in Assam. Allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) contributed 10 seats each, reinforcing the coalition’s dominance.
This victory builds on the NDA’s earlier successes in 2016 and 2021, when the alliance won 86 seats. The latest result is being hailed as a “landslide” by party leaders, who attribute the mandate to the government’s focus on development, infrastructure expansion, and improved security across the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the outcome, describing it as proof of Assam’s transformation under BJP leadership. The opposition Congress, meanwhile, suffered a significant setback, dropping to just 19–21 seats, which led to the resignation of a senior party leader in the wake of the defeat.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has emerged as a central figure in Assam’s political landscape, vowed to elevate the state into India’s top five states in terms of growth and governance. His agenda includes accelerating industrial investment, strengthening border security, and expanding welfare programs to rural communities.
Political analysts note that the BJP’s ability to secure an outright majority without relying heavily on allies signals a consolidation of its base in Assam. The results also underscore the party’s growing influence in the Northeast, a region once considered outside its traditional stronghold.
As the NDA prepares for its next term, the focus will likely remain on balancing economic modernization with cultural preservation, ensuring that Assam’s diverse communities feel represented in the state’s development journey.
