A shocking incident of violence against healthcare workers has sparked widespread outrage after Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and hospital staff at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli, Maharashtra.
The incident reportedly took place on the evening of July 6, when the family of a newborn approached hospital authorities for treatment. According to hospital officials, the infant required admission to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). However, due to all NICU beds being occupied and adverse weather conditions caused by heavy rainfall, doctors advised that the baby be shifted to another medical facility equipped to provide the necessary care.
The situation reportedly escalated when Ramesh Mhatre, aged 72, intervened during the discussion. CCTV footage that later surfaced allegedly showed the corporator and several associates entering the hospital premises and confronting the medical staff.
According to reports, the footage captured scenes in which hospital employees, including a female gynecologist, a resident doctor, and nursing staff, were allegedly shoved and physically assaulted. One resident doctor reportedly bore the brunt of the attack, with colleagues describing him as the "punching bag" during the altercation. The incident left hospital staff shaken, and reports suggest that the resident doctor later resigned, citing concerns for his personal safety.
The assault has triggered strong reactions from the medical fraternity, with doctors' associations demanding stricter action against those responsible for violence inside healthcare institutions. Medical professionals have repeatedly highlighted the growing concern over attacks on doctors, arguing that such incidents create fear and negatively affect patient care.
Following the incident, Ramesh Mhatre surrendered before the police on July 8 and was formally arrested. Shortly after his arrest, he was admitted to a hospital after reportedly complaining of chest pain. Authorities have confirmed that legal proceedings in the case will continue in accordance with the law.
The incident has also drawn a response from Shiv Sena, which publicly condemned the alleged assault. Party leaders stated that violence against doctors and hospital staff is unacceptable and stressed that healthcare professionals should be allowed to perform their duties without intimidation or fear.
Meanwhile, Mhatre has expressed regret over the incident but has denied allegations that he physically assaulted the female gynecologist. He claimed that he merely "tapped her hand" during the heated exchange and denied intentionally attacking any member of the medical staff. The allegations and his defense are expected to be examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The case has once again reignited debate over the safety of doctors and hospital workers in India. Medical associations are urging authorities to ensure swift justice and stronger protection for healthcare professionals, emphasizing that hospitals must remain safe spaces where medical personnel can focus on treating patients without the threat of violence or intimidation.
