Mundhe reportedly said that trans fats were detected in 35% of paneer samples tested, describing such products as “analogue paneer.” He further highlighted the potential consequences of consuming poor-quality paneer, particularly for people who eat it believing they are getting a healthy source of protein.

His remark, “That’s why you’re eating paneer and getting fat, not muscle,” has drawn attention to the wider issue of food adulteration and misleading products in the market.

Paneer is widely consumed in India and is often considered a protein-rich food, particularly among vegetarians and people following fitness-oriented diets. However, genuine dairy paneer and imitation or analogue products can differ substantially in their ingredients and nutritional composition.

Analogue paneer generally refers to a product in which milk fat or milk components may be partly replaced with non-dairy ingredients. Depending on how such products are formulated, their nutritional profile can differ from traditional paneer.

The reference to trans fats is particularly significant because industrial trans fats are associated with increased risks to cardiovascular health. Food-safety authorities have therefore introduced limits on industrial trans-fat content in foods.

However, the claim that consuming paneer containing trans fats directly causes someone to gain body fat instead of muscle needs to be understood carefully. Muscle growth depends on adequate protein intake, resistance training, total calorie intake, sleep and several other factors. Similarly, body-fat gain is primarily influenced by sustained excess calorie intake rather than a single ingredient.

Mundhe's comments nevertheless underline an important consumer concern: knowing whether a product sold as paneer is actually dairy paneer and understanding its nutritional composition.

Consumers can reduce the risk of buying imitation products by checking packaging labels, ingredient lists, nutritional information and the relevant food-safety markings. Products that contain vegetable fats or other substitutes should not automatically be assumed to have the same nutritional profile as traditional milk-based paneer.

The reported findings also reinforce the importance of regular food-quality testing and effective enforcement against misleading labelling and adulteration. For consumers, the episode serves as a reminder that a product's name alone may not always tell the complete story about what is inside the packet.

As concerns over food quality continue to grow, stronger testing, transparent labelling and consumer awareness remain essential to ensuring that commonly consumed foods such as paneer meet the required safety and nutritional standards.
