The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the re-conduct of the UGC NET June 2026 examination for candidates who appeared for the English, Commerce and Sociology papers. The decision comes after concerns were raised regarding errors and discrepancies in the question papers. The fresh examination is intended to provide affected candidates with a fair opportunity to compete for eligibility under the UGC NET framework.
The UGC NET June 2026 examination was originally conducted by the NTA from June 22 to June 30, 2026, covering 87 subjects. In addition, a retest was conducted on July 5, 2026, as part of the examination cycle. The national-level test is conducted to determine candidates' eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions and admission to PhD programmes in Indian universities and higher educational institutions.
The decision to conduct another examination for English, Commerce and Sociology follows scrutiny of complaints received from candidates. Reports indicated that the affected question papers contained several issues, including factual, typographical and translation-related errors. Such problems can create difficulties for candidates, particularly in a competitive examination where even a small ambiguity can influence a candidate's response and ultimately their score.
Following the complaints, a committee was constituted to examine the concerns associated with the three papers. The review reportedly found multiple errors, including misspelled names of scholars and distorted or incorrectly translated book titles. The assessment suggested that simply deleting individual problematic questions would not provide an adequate solution because the issues were spread across the papers.
As a result, NTA decided that the affected papers should be conducted again. Candidates who appeared for the concerned English, Commerce and Sociology examinations will therefore need to follow the official instructions issued by the testing agency regarding the fresh examination.
UGC NET is one of India's major eligibility examinations for postgraduate candidates seeking academic and research careers. Qualifying candidates can become eligible for Junior Research Fellowship, which supports research scholars financially, while the examination also determines eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professors. In recent years, UGC NET scores have also been used for admission to PhD programmes at participating institutions.
