Mumbai Landslide Tragedy
Early Wednesday morning, a landslide in Kurla, Mumbai claimed the lives of two people, with several others feared trapped under debris. Rescue operations are underway but are hampered by cramped access routes. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported multiple complaints of electrical short circuits and tree falls across the city as moderate rainfall returned after a brief pause. A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai and surrounding regions including Pune, Thane, Palghar, and Nashik.
Himachal Pradesh: Roads Blocked, Heavy Damage
In Himachal Pradesh, the situation remains dire. Over 200 roads are blocked due to landslides and flooding, including key national highways. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported that 70 people have died in the past 43 days due to rain-related disasters, with damages to public property exceeding ₹90 crore. Schools in districts like Kullu have been closed as authorities brace for further heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts, warning of landslides and flash floods.
Delhi Weather Forecast
Delhi residents woke up to a relatively clear morning today, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain or drizzle later in the day. The capital has already received significant rainfall this month, with corrected IMD data showing 197.2 mm of rain in the first 10 days of August, close to the monthly average. Traffic snarls and waterlogging have been frequent, with flight operations also affected earlier this week. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34–36°C, while the minimum will remain between 24–26°C.
Wider Monsoon Impact
The monsoon remains active across large parts of India, with heavy rainfall predicted in states including Rajasthan, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha, Assam, and Uttarakhand. Floods in Assam have already claimed over 100 lives and displaced thousands, while agricultural land has been submerged in several districts. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are also expected in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Jharkhand.
