Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has firmly dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown in India, calling them baseless and misleading. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, she clarified that there is no proposal, no discussion, and no situation warranting a lockdown anywhere in the country. Her statement comes amid speculation on social media and certain reports suggesting that the government was considering restrictions similar to those imposed during the pandemic years.
Sitharaman emphasized India’s relative stability compared to neighbouring Pakistan, which recently announced a 20% hike in petrol and diesel prices, raising fuel costs to 321 PKR per litre. Pakistan’s Sindh province has also introduced “smart lockdowns” to conserve fuel, underscoring the economic strain faced by the country. By contrast, India’s government reiterated that no such measures are under consideration, and the economy remains steady.
Officials and verified government accounts have also taken to social media to counter misinformation, stressing that the lockdown rumours are unfounded. The Finance Minister’s intervention aims to reassure citizens and prevent panic, highlighting that India’s policy focus remains on economic resilience and stability, not restrictive measures.
