Nepal is facing one of its most devastating flood disasters in recent years after a massive flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi River corridor in Rasuwa district on August 26, 2026. The disaster has caused extensive loss of life, destroyed homes and infrastructure and left thousands of people unaccounted for.
According to Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 675 people had been confirmed dead by August 29, while 2,426 people remained unaccounted for. More than 2,300 people had been rescued from affected areas at that stage. The figures continue to change as search teams recover bodies and verify reports of missing people.
Rasuwa and Nuwakot Among Worst-Hit Areas
The flash flood began in the Rasuwa region before floodwaters moved downstream through the Trishuli River system. Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan were among the severely affected districts, with additional casualties reported in Gorkha, Tanahun and the Nawalparasi districts.
The World Health Organization said the flooding damaged houses, markets, roads, bridges, customs facilities and hydropower infrastructure. Around 10,000 households were reported to need immediate relief. Health facilities have also been damaged or become difficult to access.
Rescue Operations Intensify
Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and other emergency teams are continuing search-and-rescue operations across the affected region. Rescuers are facing extremely difficult conditions because of damaged roads, debris, unstable terrain and rising river levels.
Authorities have given priority to locating missing people, recovering bodies and reaching isolated communities. Specialized teams are also being deployed to assist with difficult tunnel rescue operations. Nepal's government said it had requested specialized international assistance, including technology to locate survivors, tunnel-rescue expertise and forensic and DNA capabilities.
Fresh Warning Over Bhote Koshi River
The danger has not completely passed. Nepal authorities issued fresh warnings on August 30 after water levels and flow in the Bhote Koshi River increased again. Rescue teams were urged to exercise caution, while residents in vulnerable downstream areas were advised to remain alert and move to safer locations if necessary.
India and Other Countries Provide Assistance
International support is also reaching Nepal. India has supplied relief materials and deployed specialized assistance, while China and other countries have offered support for rescue and recovery operations. Nepal's Foreign Ministry said more than 57 tonnes of relief materials had already been received from India by August 29, with additional assistance coming from other countries.
The scale of destruction is expected to create major reconstruction challenges, particularly for roads, bridges, hydropower projects and homes. Search and rescue operations remain the immediate priority, while authorities continue working to identify victims and locate thousands of missing people.
