Dharmam Story

The film is set in a backward village during the late 1980s–early 1990s — a time when caste hierarchy, social oppression and power imbalance shape every aspect of life.

The protagonist, Karimuttu, lives under this harsh social order. His love story with Neela becomes a focal point of the conflict, as he must “battle the lower and upper caste people in his orthodox village to fulfil his wish of being with his partner.”

As the story unfolds, the film portrays the brutal realities of caste-based oppression, unjust authority, and the moral compromises people make in order to survive.

Early scenes are disturbing: torture by police, cries of victims, and authorities debating whether to even lodge a complaint — these set the tone for the cruelty and systemic injustice that defines village life in the film.

The film repeatedly questions — what does “dharma” (duty/righteousness) mean in a society where survival itself demands sacrifice, and morality is fragile? The line “If your dharma is to survive, your caste must be destroyed” is emblematic of this moral conflict.
