Dehradun: Nature lovers, trekkers, and wildlife enthusiasts, rejoice. Uttarakhand's UNESCO-listed Valley of Flowers National Park has officially thrown open its gates for the 2026 trekking season. The park, nestled in the western Himalayas, opened on June 1 and will remain accessible to visitors until October 31.
A High-Altitude Wonderland
Located at altitudes ranging from 3,200 to 3,600 meters (10,500 to 11,800 feet), this 87-square-kilometer national park is a botanical treasure trove. As the snow melts and summer progresses, the valley transforms into a vibrant carpet of rare alpine blooms.
The floral spectacle reaches its peak from mid-July to mid-August, when the valley bursts into color with flowers such as:
Cobra lilies (Arisaema)
Orchids (multiple rare varieties)
Blue poppies
Brahma kamal
Numerous other endemic Himalayan species
Wildlife Encounters
Beyond its floral richness, the park is a critical habitat for several endangered species. Lucky trekkers might spot:
Snow leopards (elusive and rarely seen)
Asiatic black bears
Himalayan blue sheep
Musk deer
Over 150 species of colorful butterflies and birds
The Trekking Route
Reaching this floral paradise requires effort and determination. The journey follows a two-stage trek:
First leg: A 14-kilometer trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria, the last human settlement before the park. This gradual trail follows the Pushpawati River and takes approximately 5-6 hours.
Second leg: A steeper 4-kilometer climb from Ghangaria to the park entrance. This section can take another 3-4 hours, depending on fitness levels.
Zero-Waste Rules and Conservation
Officials have urged all visitors to strictly follow zero-waste rules to protect the fragile high-altitude ecosystem. Trekkers are required to:
Carry back all non-biodegradable waste (plastic bottles, wrappers, batteries)
Avoid plucking flowers or disturbing wildlife
Stay on designated trails to prevent soil erosion
Use biodegradable toiletries or eco-friendly alternatives
Best Time to Visit
While the park is open from June to October, the ideal window for witnessing the full floral bloom is mid-July to mid-August. However, this is also the monsoon season, so trekkers should prepare for rain and slippery trails. September offers clearer skies and pleasant weather, though the flowers begin to fade.
