Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a powerful and urgent address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, condemning the UN’s perceived inaction in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine. His speech was a direct appeal to world leaders to break their silence and take decisive steps to end the war.
Zelenskyy warned that “Ukraine is only the first” in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expansionist ambitions, citing recent violations of Polish and Estonian airspace by Russian drones and jets. He emphasized that the conflict is no longer confined to Ukraine and poses a growing threat to European stability.
“Don’t stay silent while Russia keeps dragging this war on,” Zelenskyy urged. “Please speak out and condemn it. Please join us in defending life and international law, and order. People are waiting for action”.
He expressed frustration with the UN Security Council’s structure, particularly Russia’s veto power, which has repeatedly blocked resolutions aimed at resolving the conflict. “International law doesn’t work fully unless you have powerful friends who are truly willing to stand up for it,” he said.
Zelenskyy also highlighted the humanitarian crisis, accusing Russia of abducting thousands of Ukrainian children and warning of a destructive arms race fueled by AI-driven warfare. He called for immediate global action, arguing that delaying intervention would only increase the cost of future defense measures.
The Ukrainian leader’s speech resonated with many in the assembly, especially as he drew parallels with other global conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, and Palestine, questioning the UN’s effectiveness in delivering real solutions.
