Anekal, a fast-developing suburb located on Bengaluru’s outskirts, is set to be incorporated into Greater Bengaluru. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently announced plans to integrate Anekal into the city's expanding urban landscape. This move aims to improve infrastructure, enhance civic amenities, and ensure efficient governance, benefiting residents and businesses alike.
One of the major changes accompanying Anekal’s inclusion is the extension of Bengaluru’s Metro network. Authorities are preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to connect Jigani, Anekal, Sarjapur, and Bannerghatta with the Metro system, addressing the need for better transportation in these rapidly growing areas. Additionally, the government has initiated tenders to provide 30 million litres per day (MLD) of Cauvery water to Anekal, addressing long-standing water scarcity issues and facilitating sustainable development.
Anekal’s integration aligns with the recently approved Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024. This legislation, signed by Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, is designed to decentralize Bengaluru’s administration by reorganizing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into smaller municipal corporations. The restructuring is expected to improve governance efficiency, ensuring timely delivery of essential services to residents of newly incorporated areas.
Government officials have emphasized that Anekal’s inclusion in Greater Bengaluru will be a collaborative effort, involving discussions with local leaders and stakeholders. With strong political backing and a focus on urban development, this move is expected to bring significant improvements to infrastructure and public services. As Bengaluru continues to expand, integrating Anekal into its metropolitan framework will mark a key milestone in shaping a well-connected and sustainable urban future.
