Mumbai Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Forecast for Next 2 Days IMD Issues Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall from Saturday through Monday. The city and its surrounding districts—Palghar, Thane, and Raigad—are expected to experience intense showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.

What to Expect

According to the IMD, Mumbai will likely see:

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations
  • Thunderstorms with lightning
  • Wind speeds reaching 30–40 kmph
  • Waterlogging in low-lying areas
  • Disruption in traffic and public transport

The rainfall is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify and move westward, affecting the Konkan coast and central Maharashtra.

Alerts Across Maharashtra

While Mumbai is under an orange alert, several other districts including Pune, Ahmednagar, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Nanded are also bracing for severe weather. Some areas like Jalna, Beed, and Solapur are under a red alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and strong surface winds.

Coastal Precautions

High tides in the Arabian Sea are expected to coincide with the rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding along the coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to squally conditions, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60 kmph.

Civic Measures

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated emergency response teams and is monitoring water levels in reservoirs, which are currently near full capacity. Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during peak rainfall hours, and follow official advisories
