Today is Monday, July 7, 2025, and many people across India are wondering whether it is a bank holiday due to the observance of Muharram. Muharram is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar, and the 10th day, known as Yaum-e-Ashura, is often marked by public holidays in several Indian states. In 2025, Muharram was observed on Sunday, July 6. Since that date coincided with a regular Sunday closure, there was some confusion about whether a substitute holiday would be declared today.
However, banks across India are open and operating as usual today. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not declared July 7 as a national or regional bank holiday. Financial markets, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), are also functioning normally. While some local offices or schools may observe closures depending on regional decisions, banking services remain unaffected nationwide.
Looking ahead, there are several state-specific bank holidays scheduled for later in July. For example, Agartala will observe Ker Puja on July 19, and Gangtok will mark Drukpa Tshe-zi on July 28. Additionally, banks will remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month—July 12 and July 26—as well as on all Sundays. These closures vary by region, so it’s always wise to check your local holiday calendar.
Even when banks are closed, digital banking services such as ATM withdrawals, mobile banking, UPI, and internet banking remain available. However, services like cheque clearance and NEFT/RTGS transfers may be delayed on official holidays. Since today is not a holiday, you can carry out your banking tasks without any disruptions.
