In a major regulatory shift, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially banned online and distance learning (ODL) courses in Yoga, Tourism, and Hospitality from the upcoming academic session starting July–August 2025. The decision, announced via a notification dated September 18, aims to ensure quality and hands-on training in disciplines that require physical practice and experiential learning.
This move affects undergraduate and postgraduate programs across central, state, and deemed universities. Institutions previously granted permission to offer these courses online will now have their approvals revoked. The UGC has also barred universities from franchising or outsourcing online and ODL programs in these disciplines.
Why the Ban?
UGC Secretary Prof. Manish Joshi stated that subjects like Yoga demand in-person supervision, physical engagement, and practical exposure that online platforms cannot adequately provide. The decision follows earlier bans on online education in Psychology, Microbiology, Nutrition Science, Biotechnology, and Clinical Dietetics.
What’s Restricted?
- Newly Banned (2025): Yoga, Tourism, Hospitality
- Previously Banned: Engineering, Medical, Dental, Nursing, Architecture, Law, Visual Arts, Physiotherapy, Paramedical Sciences, Culinary Science, Aircraft Maintenance, Aviation
Advisory for Students
UGC has urged students to verify course recognition before enrolling and consult the official UGC website for updated lists of approved programs. Learner support centers may continue to operate, but no new franchises or outsourced online programs will be permitted.
