Who Is Swami Chaitanyananda? Delhi Godman Accused of Molesting 17 Women

Swami Chaitanyananda, a self-styled spiritual leader and head of a prominent Delhi ashram, is at the center of a widening scandal after 17 women accused him of sexual molestation. The allegations, which span several years, have triggered a police investigation and renewed calls for accountability in religious institutions.

Known for his televised discourses and large following across North India, Chaitanyananda projected himself as a healer and spiritual guide. His ashram, located in South Delhi, attracted hundreds of devotees weekly, many of whom sought personal counseling and “energy cleansing” sessions.

According to the FIR filed by Delhi Police, the women allege that the Swami used these private sessions to molest and intimidate them, often under the guise of spiritual rituals. Several staff members have also been named in the complaint for allegedly facilitating access and suppressing dissent.

“He said it was part of a purification process,” one survivor told investigators. “I was too afraid to speak out for years.”

Two senior aides have been arrested, while Chaitanyananda remains under investigation. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage, financial records, and digital communications to build the case.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has launched a parallel inquiry and urged other survivors to come forward. “We will ensure their safety and dignity,” said DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal.

Civil society groups and legal experts are demanding a national framework to regulate spiritual centers and prevent abuse of power. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a status report from Delhi Police.

This case adds to a troubling pattern of misconduct in religious spaces, where spiritual authority is often used to shield criminal behavior. Activists stress the need for survivor-centric reforms and stronger institutional checks.
