Bangladesh created history on Sunday, August 16, by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test of their two-match series in Darwin. The remarkable victory marked Bangladesh’s first-ever Test win on Australian soil and one of the biggest achievements in the team’s Test history. The visitors produced an impressive all-round performance to dominate the match and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Australia were bowled out for just 198 in their first innings, giving Bangladesh an opportunity to establish control. The visitors responded strongly with 426, taking a huge 228-run first-innings lead. Tanzid Hasan played a crucial role with a maiden Test century, scoring 101 and providing the foundation for Bangladesh’s imposing total. His innings was particularly significant as it came in only his second Test appearance.
Bangladesh’s bowlers then maintained the pressure when Australia returned for their second innings. Although Cameron Green fought back with an impressive 104, Australia struggled to withstand the visitors’ disciplined bowling attack. The hosts were eventually dismissed for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a modest target of only 57 runs for victory.
Hasan Mahmud was one of the standout performers for Bangladesh. The fast bowler finished the match with nine wickets, including a six-wicket haul in Australia’s first innings. His consistent pace and accuracy helped Bangladesh seize control during the early stages of the contest and earned him the Player of the Match award.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz also delivered a superb all-round performance. He contributed 65 runs with the bat and then claimed five wickets in Australia’s second innings. His dismissal of Steve Smith was particularly important as Bangladesh continued to break through Australia’s batting resistance. Miraz’s performance became another major factor behind the historic victory.
Chasing 57, Bangladesh completed the job comfortably, reaching 57 for one in just 14.2 overs. Mominul Haque struck the winning boundary, sparking celebrations among the Bangladesh players. The victory was achieved on the fourth day and demonstrated the visitors’ ability to perform under pressure in unfamiliar conditions.
The result is especially significant because Bangladesh had not played a Test in Australia for 23 years. Their previous two Tests in the country, both in 2003, ended in defeats. This time, however, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team displayed discipline, confidence and resilience throughout the contest.
The win is also only Bangladesh’s second Test victory against Australia. Their previous triumph came at home in Mirpur in 2017. The Darwin success therefore represents a major breakthrough for Bangladesh cricket and gives them a genuine opportunity to win the two-match series.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described the result as the team’s biggest victory in any format. With the second Test still to come, Bangladesh will now look to build on this historic momentum and attempt to complete a memorable series victory over Australia
