“Mohsin Naqvi Ran Away with Trophy”: BCCI Secretary on Asia Cup 2025 Controversy

The high-octane Asia Cup 2025 final between India and Pakistan was overshadowed by unprecedented post-match drama, with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia leveling a serious accusation against Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Following India's thrilling five-wicket victory over their arch-rivals, the traditional presentation ceremony descended into chaos after the Indian team refused to accept the winners' trophy from Mr. Naqvi, citing his dual role as a senior Pakistani leader.

In a scathing attack, the BCCI Secretary alleged that after the team's refusal, Mr. Naqvi departed the venue with the silverware and medals intended for the champions.

"We had decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the senior leaders of Pakistan.{C} That was a conscious decision," Mr. Saikia stated to reporters.

However, the Secretary condemned the subsequent turn of events, stating that the situation escalated far beyond a mere refusal.{C} "That does not mean the gentleman is entitled to walk away with the trophy and medals meant for our team and take them to his hotel room. That is completely unacceptable. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike."

The Standoff and the Missing Trophy

The controversy at the Dubai International Stadium followed a pre-meditated stand by the Indian team. Citing geopolitical tensions and Mr. Naqvi's public anti-India statements and actions throughout the tournament, the Indian contingent informed ACC officials they would be happy to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board Vice Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, but not from the ACC chief.

According to reports, Mr. Naqvi stood firm on his protocol and insisted on presenting the trophy. With the Indian players standing their ground at a distance from the podium, the ceremony was delayed for an extended period.

Eventually, amidst loud booing and chants of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" from Indian fans, the trophy was discreetly removed from the stage by an organiser, as confirmed by multiple sources. The Indian team was forced to celebrate its record ninth Asia Cup title with a 'mock' celebration on the empty podium.

"We hope the trophy and medals will be returned to India as soon as possible," Mr. Saikia added, confirming that the BCCI will lodge a "very serious and very strong protest" against the ACC Chairman's actions at the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) conference in Dubai in November.

India’s victory, secured by a spectacular knock from Tilak Varma, a Player of the Match performance, and a disciplined bowling effort, has been regrettably marred by this unprecedented trophy fiasco, turning a cricketing spectacle into a high-stakes geopolitical flashpoint.
