Mumbai: In a high-stakes gamble that signals a major shift in Bollywood's compensation model, superstar Akshay Kumar has structured an unconventional deal for the upcoming comedy Welcome to the Jungle. Instead of demanding his customary ₹50-60 crore upfront fee, Akshay has taken a modest ₹1.8 crore as advance against a staggering 72% share of post-release non-theatrical revenues.
The third installment of the blockbuster Welcome franchise is already generating significant buzz, not just for its massive ensemble cast but for Akshay's performance-linked bet on the film's success.
The Deal Breakdown
According to trade sources, Akshay Kumar will receive 72% of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) revenues generated from satellite, OTT, digital streaming, and music rights after the film's release. The remaining 28% will go to the producers. Additionally, the actor will earn 60% of the profits if the film succeeds at the box office—a stark departure from the traditional upfront-heavy model.
"In simple terms, Akshay has put his money where his mouth is. If Welcome to the Jungle becomes the blockbuster that the franchise's legacy promises, he will earn far more than his standard fee. If it underperforms, he takes a massive pay cut. It's a true producer-actor partnership," a trade analyst explained.
The Grand Ensemble
The film boasts one of the largest ensemble casts in recent Bollywood history. Akshay reunites with his Welcome (2007) co-stars Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal, reviving the beloved comic trio that fans have cherished for nearly two decades. The cast also includes Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Johny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Dutt, and nearly 30 other actors in what promises to be a chaotic comedy extravaganza.
Strong Pre-Release Business
Despite the unconventional deal, Welcome to the Jungle has already recovered a significant portion of its production cost. The film has locked in ₹120 crore from pre-release non-theatrical deals, including satellite and OTT rights. This strong backing from streaming platforms and broadcasters reflects immense confidence in the franchise's brand value and Akshay's enduring box office pull.
The film's music, composed by a team of hitmakers, has already gained popularity, and the teasers have received a robust response on social media. The official trailer is set to launch on June 11 at a grand event in Mumbai, followed by a theatrical release on June 26.
With the Welcome franchise returning after nearly two decades, nostalgia combined with Akshay's high-risk, high-reward bet makes this one of the most closely watched releases of the year.
