Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic The Odyssey is making a surprise return to IMAX screens in India after the newly released Toxic witnessed a sharp drop in collections on its second day.
The Odyssey, which was filmed entirely using IMAX cameras, enjoyed an impressive theatrical run across India. The film, featuring an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Zendaya, reportedly played for around 40 days across 34 IMAX screens in the country. During its IMAX run, the Christopher Nolan directorial earned approximately ₹90 crore from IMAX screens alone, highlighting the strong demand for the film's premium-format experience.
The film temporarily made way for Toxic on August 28. The Yash-starrer opened strongly, recording around ₹101 crore net on its opening day, but its collections reportedly dropped significantly to approximately ₹36.4 crore on the second day.
The sudden decline appears to have prompted several cinema chains to reconsider their initial screen allocation. PVR INOX and other exhibitors have reportedly brought back The Odyssey to selected IMAX locations, giving fans another opportunity to experience Nolan’s spectacle on the biggest possible format.
Showtimes have reportedly been restored in cities including Mumbai and Thane, with some screenings beginning in the early evening. However, audiences in Bengaluru may have to wait, as IMAX slots for The Odyssey have not yet been restored there.
The development has generated considerable excitement among Nolan fans on social media. Many viewers have described the move as an “uno reverse” moment, particularly because The Odyssey had already completed a substantial theatrical run before being replaced by Toxic.
Promotional messages encouraging audiences to “set sail once again” have added to the excitement surrounding the film’s return. For fans who missed watching The Odyssey in IMAX or wanted to experience its large-scale visuals again, the renewed screenings could be a welcome opportunity.
Nolan has long been associated with large-format filmmaking, and The Odyssey represents another major step in his commitment to IMAX. Shooting the entire movie with IMAX cameras was a significant production decision designed to maximise the impact of its vast landscapes, action sequences and mythology-inspired visuals.
The return of The Odyssey also demonstrates how quickly theatrical screen allocations can change depending on audience demand and a film’s performance. While Toxic had a powerful opening, its sharp second-day decline has seemingly created room for established blockbusters to return to premium screens.
