Jagdishan had been widely expected to seek a third term at the country's largest private-sector bank. According to the bank, its board took note of his decision and attempted to persuade him to reconsider. However, Jagdishan reiterated that he would not seek reappointment.

Jagdishan's HDFC Bank Journey

Jagdishan took charge as HDFC Bank's MD and CEO in October 2020, succeeding longtime chief executive Aditya Puri. He has been associated with HDFC Bank for nearly three decades, having joined the lender in 1996 and subsequently serving as its chief financial officer.

One of the biggest milestones during his tenure was the 2023 merger of HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank, creating one of India's largest financial services groups. The bank's board credited Jagdishan for his leadership and contribution to the institution's growth and stability, as well as his role in completing the landmark merger.

HDFC Bank Begins Succession Process

Following Jagdishan's decision, HDFC Bank said its board would fast-track the selection and appointment of his successor. Reports indicate that Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha and an external candidate are among the possibilities being considered, although the bank has not officially announced its next CEO.

Jagdishan's departure comes during a period of increased scrutiny of HDFC Bank's leadership. Former part-time chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March, citing concerns over values and ethics. An independent legal review commissioned by the bank subsequently found no evidence substantiating the governance concerns he had raised.

The bank also imposed a ₹1 lakh penalty on Jagdishan and two other senior executives in July following an internal review related to arrangements involving the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. The bank said the conduct amounted to "business overreach" rather than mala fide action or personal enrichment.

Jagdishan will officially retire from HDFC Bank at the close of business on October 26, 2026, bringing his nearly six-year tenure as CEO to an end. The search for his successor is now expected to become a key focus for investors and the banking sector.
