The Delhi government has introduced a landmark directive that empowers parents to purchase school textbooks, uniforms, and related materials from any vendor of their choice, breaking away from the long-standing practice of schools mandating purchases from designated suppliers. This reform, set to take effect from the 2026–27 academic session, is aimed at reducing financial burdens on families and ensuring greater transparency in school operations.
Under the new rules, schools must provide parents with a clear, class-wise list of required textbooks, notebooks, and uniform specifications well before the academic year begins. However, they cannot force parents to buy these items from specific shops or suppliers. Parents are free to explore the open market, compare prices, and choose vendors that suit their budget.
To prevent frequent changes that add unnecessary costs, schools are required to maintain uniform design consistency for at least three years. This ensures that parents do not have to purchase new sets of uniforms every year due to minor design alterations.
For years, parents across Delhi have voiced concerns about being compelled to buy textbooks and uniforms from school-appointed vendors, often at inflated prices. The new directive addresses these grievances by introducing freedom of choice and fair competition. Families can now shop around for better deals, ensuring affordability without compromising on quality.
