India has proudly celebrated the 11th anniversary of the Digital India initiative, a landmark program launched in 2015 to transform the nation into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. One of the most striking achievements is the exponential growth in connectivity, with over 103 crore internet connections now active across the country. This digital revolution has been complemented by the success of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which today accounts for nearly 50% of global real-time digital payments, positioning India as a global leader in fintech innovation.

The backbone of rural connectivity, BharatNet, has extended optical fiber to more than 2.15 lakh gram panchayats, ensuring that villages are no longer left behind in the digital journey. Similarly, the Aadhaar program has reached 144 crore enrollments, becoming the world’s largest biometric identity system and a cornerstone of India’s digital public infrastructure.

Digital services have also expanded rapidly. DigiLocker, a secure platform for storing and sharing documents, now boasts 70.69 crore users, while Jan Dhan accounts have grown to 57.78 crore, enabling financial inclusion for millions of previously unbanked citizens. Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) have revolutionized welfare delivery, with a staggering ₹51 lakh crore transferred directly to beneficiaries, eliminating leakages and ensuring transparency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address, emphasized how Digital India has empowered citizens by bridging the digital divide, expanding optical fiber networks, and promoting cashless transactions. He highlighted that the initiative is not just about technology but about transforming lives, enabling access to education, healthcare, and government services with unprecedented ease.

The Digital India journey reflects the country’s ambition to harness technology for inclusive growth. From digital payments to e-governance, from identity systems to rural connectivity, the initiative has laid the foundation for India’s future as a global digital powerhouse.
