India Ends Boarding Pass Stamping From September 1: New Airport Rule for International Travellers

International passengers departing from India will soon see a major change in the airport immigration process. From September 1, 2026, the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) will discontinue the requirement for immigration officials to stamp boarding passes at international airports across the country.

Under the new system, travellers will be able to present their electronic boarding passes on smartphones while completing immigration formalities. Passengers who prefer a printed boarding pass can continue carrying one, but immigration officials will no longer stamp it.

Why Is India Ending Boarding Pass Stamping?

The decision has been taken to make the departure process faster, simpler and more convenient for international travellers. Officials found that the physical stamping procedure could sometimes cause delays and create operational problems.

In some cases, incorrect or poorly placed stamps reportedly made important information on boarding passes difficult to read. Such issues could create complications for passengers during subsequent airport procedures.

The move is therefore part of India's broader shift towards digital and paperless immigration procedures.

E-Boarding Passes Will Be Accepted

From September 1, passengers flying internationally from India will be able to show their e-boarding passes directly on their smartphones during immigration clearance.

This means travellers will not have to worry about obtaining a physical boarding pass solely for the purpose of getting an immigration stamp.

However, passengers who already have a printed boarding pass can still use it. The new rule does not ban printed boarding passes; it simply removes the requirement for immigration officials to stamp them.

The initiative is designed to reduce delays and paperwork.
What International Travellers Need to Know

Passengers should still carry their passport and other documents required for international travel. The change only concerns the boarding-pass stamping procedure and does not eliminate immigration clearance.

Travellers should also make sure their phone has sufficient battery if they plan to rely on a digital boarding pass. Keeping a screenshot or having access to the airline's boarding-pass application can also be useful in case of connectivity issues.

The Bureau of Immigration has communicated the revised procedure to airport operators and other stakeholders ahead of its implementation.

Another Step Towards Digital Immigration

India has been gradually moving towards technology-driven immigration through initiatives such as biometric processing and e-gates. The latest boarding-pass change is another step towards reducing dependence on physical documents.

Authorities are also working towards wider digitalisation of immigration processes, including a pilot involving digital passport stamping for Indian citizens.

For frequent international travellers, the change could make airport procedures more convenient by eliminating one additional paper-based step.

Starting September 1, 2026, passengers flying abroad from India can therefore expect a simpler process at immigration: show the boarding pass digitally or carry a printed copy, but there will be no immigration stamp on the boarding pass.
