Thousands of people gathered in Pollachi on July 12 to participate in the inaugural conference of K. Annamalai's newly launched We The Leaders Foundation. The event marked the beginning of a citizen-led movement aimed at addressing social issues, with this year's conference placing a strong emphasis on building a drug-free Tamil Nadu through awareness, community participation, and youth engagement.
Addressing the large gathering, Annamalai outlined the foundation's vision of encouraging responsible leadership and grassroots action. The former BJP leader, who stepped down from his party position last month following differences over alliance-related issues, said the initiative would remain focused on public service and social development rather than political campaigns.
One of the major announcements at the conference was the declaration of July as "White Band Month." Under this campaign, participants will wear white bands as a symbol of their commitment to raising awareness about drug abuse and promoting a healthier society. The initiative seeks to involve students, young professionals, and community organizations in spreading the anti-drug message across Tamil Nadu.
Annamalai also unveiled several upcoming projects planned under the foundation's banner. In August, volunteers will launch a large-scale environmental drive with the goal of planting 50 lakh trees across the state. Another significant initiative is the establishment of an Ethics Centre, which is scheduled to be launched on the birth anniversary of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The center aims to promote ethical leadership, civic responsibility, and value-based education among young people.
The conference witnessed enthusiastic participation from the youth, with organizers stating that 54 percent of the attendees were under the age of 35. Speakers encouraged young citizens to take an active role in social reform, emphasizing that sustainable change begins with community involvement and individual responsibility.
Participants also adopted resolutions calling for stronger enforcement against drug trafficking and increased awareness campaigns in educational institutions and local communities. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between citizens, law enforcement agencies, and social organizations to tackle substance abuse effectively.
In a gesture that reflected the foundation's emphasis on civic responsibility, volunteers remained at the venue after the conference to clean the grounds before leaving. The cleanup effort was widely appreciated as a practical demonstration of the movement's commitment to leading by example.
