Mumbai residents are set to face another increase in milk prices from September 1, 2026, with the Mumbai Milk Producers Association announcing a ₹9-per-litre hike in the wholesale price of fresh buffalo milk. The wholesale rate will increase from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre.
The new rate will remain applicable until February 28, 2027, covering the upcoming festive season. The association has attributed the price increase to rising costs of dairy animals and animal feed.
Mumbai Milk Price to Increase From September 1
Under the revised pricing, the wholesale cost of fresh buffalo milk will rise by ₹9 per litre. While the announced ₹102 rate is the wholesale price, consumers are expected to pay more after retailer and distribution margins are added.
According to reports, the retail price could reach around ₹110 per litre for milk supplied directly from cattle sheds. However, the actual retail price may vary depending on the seller and location.
The latest hike follows an earlier increase in February, when the wholesale price was raised from ₹91 to ₹93 per litre. The latest ₹9 increase therefore represents a considerably larger revision.
Why Are Milk Prices Increasing in Mumbai?
The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has pointed to a sharp increase in production costs. Prices of cattle feed, grains, fodder, oil cakes and other inputs have risen, putting additional financial pressure on dairy producers.
The association has said that prices of some feed ingredients have increased by as much as 25%. Rising prices of dairy animals have also added to the cost of maintaining cattle and buffaloes.
Impact on Consumers and Food Businesses
The milk price increase could affect not only households but also businesses that depend heavily on milk. Tea stalls, restaurants, sweet shops, bakeries and other food businesses may face higher operating costs.
Higher milk prices could also eventually affect products such as curd, buttermilk, lassi, ghee and sweets, particularly if businesses pass increased input costs on to consumers.
More than 3,000 retailers reportedly sell fresh buffalo milk through Mumbai's local distribution network, meaning the wholesale price revision could have a significant impact across the city.
For Mumbai households, the September 1 increase means another rise in everyday expenses. With the wholesale price moving to ₹102 per litre and retail prices potentially reaching ₹110, consumers are likely to feel the impact directly from the beginning of next month.
