The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it is actively pursuing a proposal to establish a metro rail link connecting Hosur in Krishnagiri district with Bommasandra near Bengaluru in Karnataka. The proposed inter-state metro corridor aims to strengthen connectivity between the rapidly growing industrial hub of Hosur and Bengaluru's southern suburbs, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the Tamil Nadu Budget, where Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson said the state government is working with both the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka to move the proposal forward. The metro link is expected to improve regional transportation while supporting economic and industrial growth in the border region.
Hosur has emerged as one of Tamil Nadu's fastest-growing industrial centres, housing manufacturing facilities for automobile, electronics, and engineering companies. At the same time, Bommasandra is a key industrial and residential locality in Bengaluru, connected by the Yellow Line of Namma Metro. An extension between the two locations could significantly reduce travel time and traffic congestion along the busy Hosur Road corridor.
The proposal is expected to benefit thousands of professionals who commute daily between Hosur and Bengaluru for work. The current journey often involves heavy road traffic, particularly during peak hours. A seamless metro connection would provide a faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly alternative to road transport.
The Hosur-Bommasandra proposal forms part of Tamil Nadu's broader push to expand urban transportation infrastructure. The government also stated that the 118.9-km Chennai Metro Phase II project is progressing rapidly, with the first 14.64-km stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction expected to be commissioned soon.
In addition, Tamil Nadu is seeking early approval from the Centre for three more metro corridors in Chennai: Chennai Airport–Kilambakkam, Koyambedu–Pattabiram via Avadi, and Poonamallee–Sunguvarchathiram via Sriperumbudur. These projects are intended to enhance urban mobility and support the state's long-term infrastructure development plans.
While the Hosur-Bommasandra metro project is still at the proposal stage, it will require approvals from both the Central and Karnataka governments before construction can begin. If cleared, it would become an important inter-state metro connection, strengthening economic ties between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka while improving public transport for lakhs of commuters travelling between Hosur and Bengaluru every year.
