Tamil Nadu to Launch Online Liquor Booking Platform; Customers Can Order, Pay Digitally and Pick Up In-Store

The Tamil Nadu government is preparing to introduce a new online liquor booking platform, allowing eligible customers to browse available products, check prices, place orders, and make digital payments before visiting a store to collect their purchases. The initiative is aimed at modernizing the state's liquor retail system while improving convenience for consumers.

Under the proposed system, only customers aged 21 years and above will be allowed to access the platform. Users will be able to view the stock available at nearby TASMAC outlets, compare prices, and complete payments online. However, the government has clarified that home delivery will not be permitted, and customers must collect their orders in person after verifying their identity.

Officials say the platform is designed to reduce long queues at liquor outlets, improve transparency in pricing, and offer a smoother purchasing experience. By enabling digital payments and advance booking, the government also hopes to reduce crowding at retail stores, especially during weekends and festival periods.

The online service is expected to provide real-time information about product availability, helping customers avoid unnecessary visits to stores where their preferred brands may be out of stock. This feature is also expected to improve inventory management across TASMAC outlets.

To ensure compliance with legal drinking age requirements, customers will have to verify their age and identity during registration and again while collecting their orders. The government has indicated that strict verification procedures will be in place to prevent misuse of the system and ensure that alcohol is sold only to eligible individuals.

Despite introducing online booking, authorities have emphasized that the platform does not amount to online liquor delivery. The requirement for in-person pickup has been retained to comply with existing regulations governing the sale of alcohol in the state.

The initiative is also expected to support the state's broader push toward digital governance. Encouraging cashless transactions at TASMAC outlets could improve operational efficiency, reduce cash handling, and enhance transparency in sales records.

Industry observers believe the new platform could significantly improve customer convenience while maintaining regulatory oversight. Similar models have been adopted in several other regions, where online ordering is combined with mandatory in-store collection to balance ease of access with legal safeguards.

The launch timeline and additional operational details are expected to be announced by the Tamil Nadu government in the coming weeks. Once rolled out, the platform is likely to transform how customers purchase liquor in the state, offering a more organized and technology-driven experience while retaining strict age verification and in-person collection requirements.
