Uttar Pradesh Police have revealed the preliminary cause behind the tragic road accident that claimed the life of Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed. According to investigators, the driver of the SUV is believed to have suffered a "momentary blackout," causing him to lose control of the vehicle before it crashed into a road divider in Jhansi.
The fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning on the Kanpur–Jhansi highway as Abaan and four others were travelling to meet his elder brother, Ali Ahmed, who is currently lodged in jail. The high-speed SUV rammed into a divider, killing 21-year-old Abaan and his friend Sonu on the spot, while three other occupants sustained injuries.
Police officials said the preliminary investigation points to a brief loss of consciousness by the driver, described as a "momentary blackout," which may have prevented him from reacting in time to avoid the collision. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are examining medical, forensic, and eyewitness evidence to determine the exact sequence of events.
However, the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under scrutiny, as multiple accounts have emerged. While police have highlighted the possibility of the driver's blackout, some eyewitnesses and survivors have offered different explanations. Reports have suggested that excessive speed, an animal suddenly crossing the road, or an object on the highway could also have contributed to the accident. Officials have not confirmed any of these alternative theories and say all possibilities are being examined.
The impact of the collision was severe, leaving the SUV extensively damaged. Visuals from the accident site showed the vehicle with a shattered windshield, crushed bonnet, and significant structural damage, reflecting the force of the crash. Emergency responders rushed the injured to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared Abaan and his friend dead on arrival.
Abaan's death marks another tragic chapter for the Ahmed family. His elder brother Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in 2023, while Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead days later during a police escort in Prayagraj.
Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that a final conclusion will be drawn after all forensic reports, vehicle inspections, and witness statements are reviewed. Until then, the "momentary blackout" remains the leading explanation offered by investigators for the devastating crash.
