Heavy Rainfall in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi: Schools Declared Closed on June 16

The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are experiencing intense monsoon showers, prompting authorities to issue a red alert and declare a holiday for schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday, June 16. The decision comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and residents, given the ongoing heavy rainfall and potential risks of waterlogging and flooding.

Areas Affected by the School Closure
The holiday applies to Anganwadi centres, primary, and high schools—both government, aided, and private—in the following taluks:

  • Mangaluru
  • Bantwal
  • Ullal
  • Moodbidri
  • Mulki

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea, and district officials have been directed to stay alert and respond to emergencies.

Red Alert and Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds (40-50 kmph), and rough sea conditions, advising residents to take necessary precautions.

Emergency Measures and Public Advisory
District administrations have set up control rooms for emergency assistance. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors, and follow official updates regarding weather conditions and safety measures.
