The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for several regions in Maharashtra, including Pune and Mumbai, following intense overnight showers. An orange alert has been declared for Pune, Raigad, Satara, and Aurangabad, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Mumbai and Thane have been placed under a yellow alert, with forecasts predicting moderate to intense spells of rain throughout the day.
Mumbai witnessed severe waterlogging in areas like King’s Circle and Matunga, disrupting traffic and daily routines. Rainfall data from IMD showed Colaba receiving 88.2 mm, Bandra 82 mm, and Byculla 73 mm between September 14 and 15. The IMD has warned of continued showers, with gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph in some parts. Commuters have been advised to exercise caution, as flooding in low-lying areas may persist.
In Pune, the situation is equally concerning. Late-night thunderstorms and heavy rain led to waterlogging in several neighborhoods, prompting residents to call for school and office closures on social media. The Shivajinagar observatory recorded 13.8 mm of rain, while Talegaon and Hadapsar saw 15 mm and 13.5 mm respectively. The IMD has activated an orange alert for the city, with warnings of further rainfall and possible disruptions.
Authorities across Maharashtra are closely monitoring the situation, especially in regions under red and orange alerts. The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada through September 15 and 16. Citizens are urged to stay indoors where possible, avoid flooded roads, and follow official advisories to ensure safety during this period of extreme weather.
