The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts, warning of intense to very intense spells of rainfall over the next three hours. The alert, issued early Monday morning, comes in response to rapidly developing weather systems in the Konkan region, prompting authorities to activate emergency protocols and advise residents to remain indoors.
According to IMD officials, the red alert signifies extremely heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods, waterlogging, and disruption of transport and essential services. The warning is particularly critical for low-lying areas and coastal zones, where drainage systems may be overwhelmed by the sudden downpour. Local administrations have been instructed to stay on high alert and deploy disaster response teams where necessary.
Mumbai has already witnessed overnight showers that caused waterlogging in several parts of the city, including Sion, Dadar, and Andheri. Train services on the Central and Western lines are running with delays, and traffic congestion has been reported on major arterial roads. Schools and colleges in affected zones have been advised to remain shut until further notice, and citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
The IMD has also cautioned that the weather may remain unstable throughout the day, with the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds accompanying the rain. Residents of Thane and Raigad are advised to monitor official updates and take precautionary measures to ensure safety. With the monsoon still active across Maharashtra, authorities are working to minimize risks and ensure swift response to any emergencies that may arise.
