A tragic accident occurred on June 9, 2025, during peak office hours on Mumbai’s Central Railway line, claiming the lives of five commuters and injuring several others. The incident took place between Diva and Kopar railway stations, where two overcrowded local trains were crossing each other. One train was heading towards Kasara, while the other was en route to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). According to railway officials, the victims, aged between 30 and 35 years, were traveling on the footboards when they lost balance and fell onto the tracks.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident happened when passengers hanging from the doors of both trains brushed against each other due to extreme overcrowding. Some commuters lost their footing and fell onto the tracks, leading to fatal injuries. A railway police constable, Vicky Mukhyadal, was among the deceased. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with officials citing overcrowding and lack of safety measures as contributing factors. The Railway Ministry has announced plans to install automatic door-closing systems in Mumbai’s suburban trains to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The accident has sparked concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, which is known for its high-density commuter traffic. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an inquiry into the incident, urging railway authorities to implement stricter safety measures. Meanwhile, railway officials are working on identifying the deceased and providing medical assistance to the injured. The tragedy has reignited discussions on overcrowding, infrastructure improvements, and commuter safety, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in Mumbai’s railway system.
