Nissan is preparing for an aggressive comeback in the Indian market, with the Japanese automaker planning to expand its SUV portfolio following the launch of the Tekton in July. While the company has ruled out introducing a hybrid version of the Tekton, Nissan is expected to strengthen its presence with potentially three new SUVs over the coming years.
New Three-Row SUV to Rival Hyundai Alcazar
The next major Nissan SUV for India is expected to arrive in 2027. Positioned above the Tekton, the upcoming model will be a C-segment three-row SUV aimed at family buyers and is expected to compete with models such as the Hyundai Alcazar.
The SUV is expected to measure around 4.6 metres in length, with a wheelbase of approximately 2.7 metres. Nissan has confirmed a seven-seat configuration, although a six-seat version with second-row captain's chairs could also be offered.
Power is expected to come from a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing around 161 hp and 280 Nm. Transmission options could include a six-speed manual and a six-speed dual-wet-clutch automatic.
Nissan Patrol Could Arrive in India in 2027
Nissan could also introduce its flagship Patrol in India as a completely built unit (CBU) import by early 2027.
The full-size, body-on-frame SUV competes internationally with premium models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 300. It can accommodate up to eight passengers and is expected to offer an extensive list of premium features.
These could include 22-inch wheels, adaptive air suspension, twin 14.3-inch displays, a colour head-up display, zero-gravity front seats with massage functionality, rear entertainment screens and a 12-speaker Klipsch audio system.
The Patrol is expected to use Nissan's 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, producing approximately 425 hp and 700 Nm. A nine-speed automatic transmission and part-time four-wheel-drive system could be offered.
Terrano Nameplate Could Return
Looking further ahead, Nissan could revive the iconic Terrano nameplate with an all-new D-segment SUV. The model could debut globally around 2028, with an Indian launch potentially taking place by 2029.
The upcoming SUV is expected to target the Toyota Fortuner and could be locally assembled using imported knocked-down kits. Nissan may develop it using a modified body-on-frame platform related to the Frontier Pro pickup.
The new Terrano could be offered with both internal-combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid powertrains, giving Nissan an opportunity to compete in the rapidly evolving premium SUV segment.
With the Tekton followed by a new three-row SUV, the Patrol and potentially a next-generation Terrano, Nissan appears to be preparing a significantly broader SUV strategy for India.
