Yamaha has launched the all-new Yamaha R2 in India, expanding its performance motorcycle range with a new 200cc-class sports bike. Priced from ₹2.30 lakh (ex-showroom), the R2 is available in three variants and five colour options. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from mid-September 2026.
1. New 204cc Engine
The Yamaha R2 is powered by a 204cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, single-cylinder engine producing 26.1bhp and 19.1Nm. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox and comes with a slip-and-assist clutch as standard.
The mid-spec variant and top-spec R2 M also get a bi-directional quickshifter, allowing faster and smoother gear changes during spirited riding.
2. New Diamond Frame
The motorcycle is built around a diamond-type frame and gets an upside-down fork at the front along with a monoshock at the rear.
The R2 rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with disc brakes at both ends. The range-topping R2 M variant gets additional equipment, including preload-adjustable front suspension and adjustable clutch and brake levers.
3. TFT Display and Three Riding Modes
Technology is another major highlight of the Yamaha R2. The motorcycle features a TFT instrument console with smartphone connectivity.
It also gets three riding modes — Street, Sport and Rain — allowing riders to alter the motorcycle's character according to different riding conditions. Traction control is offered as standard across all variants, while the R2 M additionally gets a Smart Key System for keyless ignition.
4. Three Variants Available
Yamaha is offering the R2 in three variants: the standard R2, R2 with quickshifter and the top-spec R2 M.
Prices range from ₹2.30 lakh to ₹2.53 lakh (ex-showroom). Buyers can choose from five colour options, although colour availability depends on the selected variant.
5. Rivals KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR
With its starting price of ₹2.30 lakh, the Yamaha R2 enters India's premium 200cc sports-bike segment. Its key rivals include the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR 210.
The combination of a new 204cc engine, six-speed transmission, riding modes, traction control, TFT instrumentation and optional quickshifter gives the R2 a strong technology-focused package. Deliveries are expected to begin in mid-September 2026.
Overall, the Yamaha R2 brings a fresh option to buyers looking for a fully faired performance motorcycle below the larger 250cc and 300cc segments. Its pricing and feature list could make it an interesting alternative to established rivals in India's entry-level performance-bike market.
