HDFC Bank Considers Kaizad Bharucha, Jimmy Tata as Internal CEO Candidates

HDFC Bank is considering senior executives Kaizad Bharucha and Jimmy Tata as potential internal candidates to succeed Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, who is set to retire from the bank in October 2026. The development comes as India's largest private-sector lender moves quickly to find a new leader.

According to sources cited by NDTV Profit, the bank may have communicated the names of the two internal candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). However, the bank has not officially commented on the reported candidates. External candidates could also be considered by HDFC Bank's Nomination and Remuneration Committee and board.

Who Is Kaizad Bharucha?

Kaizad Bharucha is HDFC Bank's Deputy Managing Director and a veteran of the lender. He has been associated with the bank for several years and has held senior responsibilities across its retail and wholesale banking operations.

Bharucha was reportedly among the executives considered for the CEO position in 2020 before Sashidhar Jagdishan was selected to succeed longtime chief executive Aditya Puri. His experience within the bank puts him among the strongest internal contenders for the top position.

However, there could be a regulatory consideration. Bharucha has served on HDFC Bank's board for around 12 years, and RBI rules generally limit a director's tenure at a bank to 15 years. According to NDTV Profit's sources, he may therefore require special dispensation from the banking regulator if selected for the CEO position.

Who Is Jimmy Tata?

Jimmy Tata is HDFC Bank's Chief Credit Officer and has been associated with the bank since 1994, serving in various roles during his long career with the lender.

Tata recently received an extension of his tenure as chief credit officer. His long experience within HDFC Bank makes him another potential internal option as the bank searches for Jagdishan's successor.

When Will Sashidhar Jagdishan Step Down?

Jagdishan announced on August 29 that he would not seek reappointment as HDFC Bank's MD and CEO. Despite the board reportedly attempting to persuade him to reconsider, he maintained his decision.

He will retire from HDFC Bank at the close of business on October 26, 2026. Jagdishan became the bank's CEO in October 2020, succeeding Aditya Puri, and is currently serving his second three-year term.

RBI Approval Will Be Crucial

The appointment of the next CEO of a private-sector bank requires RBI approval. HDFC Bank is therefore expected to consider multiple candidates before making a final recommendation.

For now, Bharucha and Tata are reportedly being considered alongside potential external candidates. The final decision will depend on the bank's board process and regulatory approval.

The leadership transition is particularly significant for HDFC Bank following several governance and management developments in 2026. Investors will closely watch the succession process as the bank prepares for a new CEO after Jagdishan's departure.
