JPMorgan Announces Fresh Job Cuts

According to a new Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing submitted to New Jersey authorities, JPMorgan Chase plans to eliminate 63 positions at its Jersey City office. The latest cuts began on August 19 and are scheduled to continue through November 15, 2026. 

The filing represents the fifth workforce-reduction notice submitted by JPMorgan for the Jersey City location this year. Previous notices covered 120 positions in February, 134 in March, 51 in May and 172 in July. Together with the latest 63 positions, the total reaches 541. 

Layoffs Part Of Regular Workforce Management

JPMorgan has previously characterised such job reductions as part of its regular management of business needs, rather than a single company-wide restructuring programme. The bank regularly reviews staffing requirements and adjusts its workforce accordingly. 

The latest layoffs come despite JPMorgan maintaining a strong overall business position. Recent reporting indicates that the bank has continued to grow its workforce in several areas, even as specific teams and locations undergo staffing adjustments.

AI And Banking Sector Changes

The layoffs also come amid growing adoption of artificial intelligence and automation across the financial-services industry. Banks are increasingly using AI to improve productivity, automate certain processes and change the way employees handle routine tasks.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has previously discussed the potential impact of AI on the financial sector. However, he has also noted that competitors are adopting similar technologies, meaning AI-driven productivity gains may not necessarily provide one bank with a lasting competitive advantage.

JPMorgan Layoffs In 2026

The latest Jersey City filing is part of a broader pattern of workforce reductions at JPMorgan this year. Earlier WARN notices across Texas, New Jersey and California affected hundreds of employees. An analysis cited by Barron's found that JPMorgan had filed notices affecting 774 employees between February and July, the highest level of reported layoffs since 2015.

However, those WARN filings represent only layoffs that meet reporting requirements, meaning the actual number of employees affected by smaller workforce reductions could be higher.

For now, JPMorgan continues to emphasise that its staffing changes are part of ongoing business management rather than a broad restructuring of the entire organisation.
