Meta has expanded WhatsApp’s digital payment capabilities in India with the launch of a new Bill Payments feature. Announced on September 3, 2026, the service allows users to find, manage and pay household and utility bills without leaving the WhatsApp application.
The new service is powered by Bharat Connect, formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), giving users access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. This puts a wide range of routine payments directly inside one of India's most widely used messaging platforms.
What Bills Can Users Pay on WhatsApp?
The new feature covers several important household and financial payments. Users can pay electricity, gas and water bills, as well as FASTag-related payments. The service also supports insurance premiums, credit card bills and loan repayments.
The integration is designed to reduce the need to switch between different applications whenever a bill becomes due. WhatsApp is positioning the service as an extension of its existing payments and everyday-services ecosystem in India.
How to Pay Bills Through WhatsApp
Using the feature is designed to be relatively straightforward. Users need to open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen to access the payments section.
They can then select the relevant bill category and biller, enter and confirm their account details, and review the bill amount fetched by the system. After checking the details, users can select their preferred payment method and confirm the transaction.
WhatsApp supports UPI, debit cards and credit cards for bill payments.
The feature also includes options for managing multiple accounts under a single biller. Users can view previous payments and upcoming bills, while frequently used billers can be accessed more easily.
Gradual Rollout for Android and iOS
WhatsApp says Bill Payments is being rolled out gradually across India. The feature will become available to users on both Android and iOS over the coming weeks. Therefore, users who cannot see the option immediately may need to wait until the feature reaches their account.
The launch represents another step in Meta's efforts to turn WhatsApp into more than a messaging platform. With payments, business services, ticketing and now utility-bill management available within the app, WhatsApp is increasingly becoming a single destination for everyday digital tasks.
For millions of Indian users, the new feature could make recurring payments more convenient by bringing multiple household bills into an application they already use regularly.
