Apple is preparing for a major leadership transition as Tim Cook steps down as Chief Executive Officer on September 1, 2026, ending a tenure of more than 15 years at the helm of the technology giant. Cook will not leave Apple completely. Instead, he will become executive chairman of Apple's board, while longtime hardware executive John Ternus takes over as the company's new CEO.
Apple officially announced the succession plan in April, describing it as the result of a long-term succession planning process approved unanimously by the company's board. Cook will continue working with Ternus during the transition before formally moving into his new role.
Tim Cook's 15-Year Apple Era
Cook became Apple's CEO in August 2011, succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs. During his leadership, Apple expanded dramatically in terms of revenue, global reach and product categories.
His tenure also saw the launch and expansion of products and services including the Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple silicon-powered Macs, Apple TV+ and Vision Pro. Apple also strengthened its services business and significantly expanded its global supply chain and manufacturing operations.
As Cook prepares to leave the CEO position, Apple has reportedly held a farewell gathering at Apple Park attended by senior executives and employees. The event included tributes from several prominent figures associated with the company.
John Ternus Becomes Apple's New CEO
John Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001 and has served as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering since 2021, will become CEO on September 1.
Ternus has played a key role in Apple's hardware development and has been involved with major products including the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple Chairman Arthur Levinson said the company believes Ternus is the right person to lead Apple into its next phase.
The leadership change comes at an important moment for Apple, particularly as the company continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence while facing increasing competition in smartphones and other technology markets.
Cook Will Remain Closely Connected to Apple
Although Cook is stepping down as CEO, his new role as executive chairman means he will remain involved with the company. Apple said he will assist with certain aspects of the business, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
The transition will become official on September 1, 2026, marking the end of the Tim Cook era as Apple's CEO and the beginning of the John Ternus era.
