The Karnataka government has temporarily halted the cancellation and revision of BPL ration cards, providing relief to beneficiaries who were concerned about losing access to subsidised food grains. Newly appointed Food and Civil Supplies Minister Rizwan Arshad has directed officials to pause the ongoing BPL card revision process.
The decision comes amid concerns surrounding the verification of ration cards and the identification of beneficiaries eligible for government food-security schemes. According to the latest report, the minister has asked officials to stop the cancellation process for the time being while ensuring that eligible families continue receiving their benefits.
e-KYC Mandatory for All Ration Card Beneficiaries
While BPL card cancellations have been put on hold, the government has made e-KYC mandatory for all ration card beneficiaries. Around 2.65 crore beneficiaries in Karnataka are required to complete the verification process at their respective fair-price shops by September 30, 2026.
The e-KYC process is intended to verify the identity and eligibility of people receiving benefits through the Public Distribution System (PDS). Beneficiaries are expected to visit their ration shops and complete Aadhaar-based authentication.
The government has been pushing e-KYC to improve transparency in ration distribution and identify duplicate or ineligible beneficiaries. Similar Aadhaar-based verification requirements have also been implemented nationally to ensure that food-grain benefits reach genuine beneficiaries.
Why BPL Card Verification Is Important
BPL ration cards provide eligible low-income families access to subsidised food grains under Karnataka's public distribution system. Any cancellation or change in eligibility can therefore have a direct impact on household food security.
