A 54-year-old Manipuri guitarist and music teacher, Chongtham Vikram Singh, died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of people outside his residence in Kilokari village in southeast Delhi, triggering anger among members of the Northeast community and calls for swift justice.
According to police and people familiar with the case, the incident took place late Sunday night after Singh allegedly objected to a group creating a commotion near his home. The confrontation reportedly escalated, with the group allegedly chasing him towards his building and assaulting him.
Singh was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment but died from his injuries on Monday morning. Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Seven Adults Arrested, Minor Apprehended
Police said investigators used CCTV footage, technical surveillance and local intelligence to identify those allegedly involved in the assault.
Seven adults have been arrested, while a 15-year-old boy has also been apprehended in connection with the case. Police are continuing to investigate the individual roles of those accused and the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation.
Singh had reportedly lived in Delhi for many years and worked as a private music teacher. He was known in the Manipuri music community and had played lead guitar for bands before moving to Delhi, where he continued his association with music.
Candlelight March Demands Justice
Following Singh's death, nearly 100 people from the Northeast community gathered in Kilokari for a candlelight march, demanding swift action against those responsible.
Participants called for a thorough investigation and justice for Singh and his family. The incident has also renewed concerns among members of the Northeast community about safety and discrimination in Delhi.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed condolences and urged the Delhi Police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that justice is delivered at the earliest.
Some relatives and community representatives have also raised concerns about possible racial discrimination. However, police have not established a racial motive, and the investigation into the circumstances and motive behind the assault is continuing.
A Tragic Loss for the Music Community
Singh's death has left the Manipuri and wider Northeast community deeply shocked. Friends and community members have remembered him as a dedicated musician and teacher who had spent years building a life around music in Delhi.
The case has also sparked a broader conversation about public safety, intolerance and the treatment of people from the Northeast living in metropolitan cities.
