The announcement was made by Vijay in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on August 19, 2026, under Rule 110. The government said the measures are intended to help legislators travel across their constituencies, inspect development works and address public grievances more effectively.

What Will Tamil Nadu MLAs Get?

Under the new announcement, all 234 MLAs will be provided with a government vehicle for constituency-related work.

In addition, every MLA will receive ₹75,000 per month as a vehicle allowance. The amount is intended to cover expenses such as the driver's salary, fuel and vehicle maintenance.

The government has also announced an additional ₹25,000 per month for each MLA to hire an assistant for official and constituency-related work. Necessary amendments to the relevant legislation will be made before the measures are formally implemented.

Why Did CM Vijay Announce the Scheme?

The announcement followed a request from VCK MLA Jothimani, who reportedly highlighted the difficulties faced by some legislators who do not have personal vehicles or sufficient financial resources for constituency travel.

Vijay said that several first-time MLAs come from modest backgrounds and may find it difficult to meet the expenses associated with travelling throughout their constituencies. The government said providing vehicles and financial support would help elected representatives carry out their public duties more effectively.

₹2.34 Crore Monthly Expenditure

The new vehicle allowance alone could amount to ₹1.755 crore per month for 234 MLAs, based on ₹75,000 per MLA.

The additional ₹25,000 assistant allowance would add another ₹58.5 lakh per month. Together, the two allowances amount to approximately ₹2.34 crore every month, or about ₹28.08 crore annually, excluding the cost of purchasing the vehicles.

The decision has also sparked political debate, with critics questioning the additional burden on the state exchequer, while the government argues that the facilities will improve constituency-level administration.

New Benefits for Tamil Nadu MLAs

The announcement has attracted considerable attention because it provides all 234 legislators with access to government vehicles, ₹75,000 monthly vehicle-related support and ₹25,000 monthly assistance for an office assistant.

The move is being presented by the Vijay government as an effort to strengthen grassroots governance and make it easier for MLAs to remain accessible to people in their constituencies.
