Bank Strike Alert: Unions Call Nationwide Strike On Sept. 11. Here's Why
Bank customers across India may face disruption in banking services in September as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a nationwide strike on September 11, 2026. The strike has been called over several unresolved issues, including the long-pending demand for a five-day banking week, differences over the performance-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and pension-related demands.
Why Are Bank Unions Going On Strike?
The biggest demand is the implementation of a five-day banking week. According to the UFBU, the Indian Banks' Association had agreed to the proposal as part of the 12th Bipartite Settlement/9th Joint Note signed in March 2024. Under the proposal, bank employees would work additional hours from Monday to Friday to compensate for the extra weekly holiday.
However, the proposal has remained pending for more than two years, prompting unions to intensify their protest.
Another major issue is the government's performance-linked incentive scheme. Bank unions have objected to the structure of the scheme, particularly the differences in potential incentives between senior officers and other employees. The unions argue that the arrangement does not reflect the understanding reached with the Indian Banks' Association.
Pension Issues Also Among Key Demands
Bank unions are also seeking the updating and improvement of pension benefits, a uniform dearness allowance formula for pensioners and an option for employees covered by the National Pension System (NPS) to switch to the old pension scheme.
The UFBU has said several of these issues remain unresolved despite discussions with the government and bank management.
Will Banks Remain Closed For Four Days?
September 11, 2026, falls on a Friday. If the strike proceeds as announced, banking services could be affected on that day. It will be followed by the weekend, while September 14 is a Ganesh Chaturthi holiday in some states. As a result, customers in several parts of the country could experience disruption for up to four consecutive days.
The impact is expected to be more significant at public sector banks, although the exact level of disruption will depend on participation and local circumstances.
More Strikes Planned
The September 11 action may not be the only strike. UFBU has also announced a three-day nationwide strike beginning September 28, coinciding with the half-yearly bank closure.
The unions have further warned of an indefinite nationwide strike from October 26 if their demands are not addressed by the government and bank management.
What Should Bank Customers Do?
Customers with important branch-related work should consider completing transactions before September 11. People can also use UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs where available, although physical branch services may be affected.
The strike is currently an announcement by the unions, so customers should watch for further updates from their individual banks and authorities before making plans
