The flood situation in Bihar continues to remain grim, with approximately 2.24 million people affected across 12 districts as swollen rivers inundate large parts of the state. Heavy rainfall in Bihar and neighbouring Jharkhand has pushed several major rivers above danger levels, increasing the threat to low-lying and riverine areas.
The Ganga has crossed its previous highest flood level at multiple locations in and around Patna, raising concerns about further flooding downstream. At Gandhi Ghat, the river reached 50.57 metres, exceeding the earlier highest flood level of 50.52 metres recorded in August. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels at other vulnerable locations, including Pandarak and Danapur.
12 Districts Hit by Floodwaters
According to the latest official update, around 22.42 lakh people have been affected across Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai and Arwal. The flooding has disrupted daily life, damaged infrastructure and left several communities dependent on relief and rescue operations.
The Ganga is not the only river causing concern. The Gandak, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, Punpun, Bagmati and Ghaghra are also flowing above danger levels at several monitoring points. Bihar has recorded rainfall significantly above normal during September, contributing to the worsening situation.
Rescue and Relief Operations Intensified
Authorities have deployed 27 State Disaster Response Force teams and 10 National Disaster Response Force teams to support evacuation and emergency operations. More than 1,400 boats have also been pressed into service to move people from flooded and vulnerable areas to safer locations.
Relief efforts have also expanded, with 190 community kitchens operating across affected districts to provide meals to flood-hit residents. Medical and emergency teams are being deployed in vulnerable areas as officials continue monitoring embankments, river levels and low-lying settlements.
Train Services Disrupted
The floods have also affected railway connectivity. Train operations on parts of the Patna-Gaya section have been disrupted after rising Punpun river waters affected infrastructure near Punpun Ghat. Several local and express services have been suspended, cancelled or diverted.
With more rainfall forecast in parts of Bihar, authorities remain on high alert. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to avoid rivers and follow instructions issued by local administrations as rescue and relief operations continue
