A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at IIT Delhi died on Saturday morning, August 22, after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a campus building, police said. The incident took place at the institute's Lecture Hall Complex and has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
According to police, a PCR call was received at Kishangarh police station at around 8:33 am reporting that a student had fallen from a building at the IIT Delhi campus. Police personnel immediately reached the location and took the injured student to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Crime and forensic teams were subsequently called to the scene to collect evidence.
Student Entered Campus Around 8 AM
The preliminary investigation found that the student had entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 am. He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex and reportedly took a lift to the sixth floor before falling from the front side of the building.
Police identified him as a 31-year-old student from the M.Sc. Physics Department. Reports also state that he was a second-year postgraduate student and a resident of Bihar.
No Suicide Note Found
Investigators have so far not recovered a suicide note from the location. Police also said that the initial examination did not reveal apparent injuries other than those associated with the fall.
A mobile phone was recovered from the student's pocket and has been taken for examination. Police are also obtaining relevant records from IIT Delhi as part of their investigation.
Reports indicate that police are examining the student's counselling records and other information available with the institute to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. The exact reason remains under investigation, and authorities have not announced a definitive motive.
IIT Delhi Expresses Condolences
IIT Delhi expressed grief over the student's death and said that the Delhi Police are investigating the incident. The institute also stated that it is providing support to the bereaved family.
The incident has also drawn attention to student wellbeing and mental-health support at higher-education institutions. However, investigators have yet to establish the circumstances that led to the student's death, and speculation about a specific motive would be premature.
The police investigation is ongoing, with the student's phone, counselling records and other available information being examined to piece together what happened before the incident.
